20 липня у бібліотечному ресурсному центрі "Вікно в Америку" відбулося засідання англійського книжкового клубу. Разом з нашим лідером Бредом Банністером відвідувачі обговорили новелу О. Генрі «Подарунок волхвів».
О. Генрі – відомий американський письменник, справжнє ім'я якого – Вільям Сідней Портер. Його новели відомі своєю кмітливістю, грою слів та цікавими закінченнями.
Для своєї новели «Дари волхвів» автор обрав дуже символічну назву з біблійною конотацією. Волхви – мудреці, які прийшли з подарунками привітати Ісуса Христа з днем народження. За легендою, їхні подарунки – це дорогоцінні аромати. З цього часу започатковується звичай дарувати подарунки близьким на Різдво, як намагалася зробити молода пара в романі О. Генрі. Обидва герої твору пожертвували своїми скарбами заради коханої людини. Автор називає їх справжніми мудрецями-магами, адже їхня мудрість полягає не в матеріальних дарах, а в любові та відданості один одному.
У цього твору є автобіографічні моменти. По-перше, героїню Деллу автор списав з коханої дружини Етоли. По-друге, у його житті склалася подібна ситуація. «Дари волхвів» стали однією з найкращих і найпопулярніших новел О. Генрі. У ній відчувається душа автора, вбачаються найвиразніші риси його таланту.

On July 20th Mykolaiv Window on America had the English Book Club.
Together with our leader Brad Bannister our visitors discussed the short story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.
O.Henry is a famous American writer whose real name is William Sydney Porter. O. Henry’s short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and clever twist endings.
For his short story "Gifts of the Magi", the author chose a very symbolic name with a biblical connotation. The Magi are sages who came with gifts to congratulate Jesus Christ on his birthday. According to legend, their gifts are precious fragrances. From this event begins the custom of giving gifts to loved ones at Christmas, as tried to do a young couple in the novel by O. Henry. Both heroes of the work were able to give up their treasure for the sake of a loved one. The author calls them true sages-magi, because their wisdom is not in material gifts, but in their love and devotion to each other, the ability to sacrifice for love.
This work by an outstanding author has autobiographical moments. First, the appearance of the heroine of the novel Della, he wrote off from his beloved wife Etol. Secondly, there was a similar situation in his life. When Henry's wife became seriously ill, he himself was far from home, abroad, hiding from the threat of imprisonment. With no money for medicine, a step to her death, she sold her lace shawl and bought her husband a Christmas present - a gold watch chain, which she mailed to him. However, such a gift from his wife was no longer O. Henry. Upon receiving news of his beloved wife's plight, he sold his watch and bought a train ticket to return to her and support her in a difficult moment, despite the real threat of going to prison.
